Questions about compress image
How does PNG compression work?
PNG is a lossless format, so it is made smaller by reducing the number of colours (up to 256) while keeping transparency. This works best for graphics, screenshots and logos. For photos, converting to JPG or WebP usually saves far more.
Why did I get my original file back?
If re-compressing would make a file larger — which happens when it is already well optimised — the original is kept and the results say so.
Is photo metadata kept?
No. Compressed images are re-encoded by your browser, which removes metadata such as camera details and GPS location. Photos are turned upright according to their orientation tag first.
